Teaching & outreach

Eight years in front of a school class ran alongside the degrees, not before them. What follows is the record — a school in Tehran, a graduate course with fifty thousand people in it, and a continuing habit of taking physics to audiences that did not come looking for it.

8years of school teaching
30+workshops organised
8science courses founded
~50,000enrolled on Coursera

The classroom

Allameh Helli School for gifted & talented students · Tehran

  1. 2008–2016

    High-school and middle-school physics

Eight years of ordinary teaching load, and around it: more than thirty workshops organised, curricular physics courses designed from scratch, and eight extracurricular science courses founded and run.

  2. 2013–2016

    Head of the Physics Chamber

The school’s physics room and everything that happened in it, including a student team coached in 2014 for CERN’s Beamline for Schools competition.

  3. 2018–2023

Instructor and coach for physics teachers

Online programmes on phenomenology, new course materials, workshops, and coaching for scientific competitions — the same work one step back from the class, aimed at the people standing in front of it.

The lecture hall

University of Tehran · University of Maryland

  1. 2019

Moderator & teaching assistant — Exploring Quantum Physics

The Coursera course out of the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland, with roughly fifty thousand enrolments. Moderating a course that size is a different craft from teaching thirty people: the questions arrive in writing, in bulk, and from every level at once.

  2. 2015–2016

    Graduate and undergraduate teaching assistant

Gravitation I and II (graduate), Elementary Particle Physics, Special & General Relativity, and Physics of Music — Department of Physics, University of Tehran.

  3. Fall 2010

    Introduction to Computer Programming

Department of Physics, University of Tehran.

  4. 2022

    Mentor, incoming graduate-student programme

Department of Physics, University of Maryland.

Outside the room

Public courses · fact-checking · the science fair

  1. 2019–2023

Tea with Physics and Special Relativity for Enthusiasts

Two public outreach courses, designed and taught: modern physics and fact-checking for general and non-physics audiences. No prerequisites, and therefore no shortcuts — every idea has to be built from something the room already has.

  2. 2018–2021

    Sieve — الک

A programme of comprehensive fact-checking of public myths through physics, in Persian. A claim goes viral; the physics that settles it gets worked out in public, and the teaching happens on the way through. It is the outreach courses continued by other means, and it is still running.

  3. Fall 2018

The Footprint of Physics in Classical Persian Literature

Interdisciplinary research and a presentation, on what a physics teacher can honestly take from a thousand years of Persian verse — and what gets forced.

  4. Spring 2018

    APS Science-Fair volunteer

Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, D.C.

What a physics teacher can honestly take from a thousand years of verse

The Footprint of Physics in Classical Persian Literature «ردّپای فیزیک»

The question the article starts from is a teacher’s question. Standing in a physics class, wanting to read out an old couplet that genuinely bears on the topic at hand and is worth hearing as poetry — how many such couplets are there? The answer is: very few. And that scarcity is the finding. It means the set is bounded, and a bounded set can be partitioned, examined and described rather than merely admired.

What the article is not is the more familiar exercise of dressing modern results in classical verse. Its own image for that is a tailor who has cut the chest too tight and the sleeve too long: the poem is prevented from breathing, and the expectations placed on it are raised past anything it can carry. Nothing here is claimed as knowledge obtained from the poets. The question is only how, and how much, they attended to physical nature.

Once texts written to teach science are set aside — Bīrūnī’s al-Tafhīm, or Ferdowsi’s account of creation, which are about the subject and so leave no footprint of it — what remains divides cleanly in two, and each half again.

The partition, as the article sets it out
عینیconcrete — what can be touched سنجشیmeasured Distances given, instruments used; motion simply described; an eyewitness report of what was seen.
شیء‌گراobject-bound Physical definitions — acceleration, force, mass, an astronomical measure; objects — the sphere, the star, each of the four elements; phenomena — gravity, the dark of the moon, lightning, the sky changing colour.
عقلیreasoned — what is argued دستوریprocedural Empirical rules that admit exceptions; passages that carry their argument with them; step-by-step accounts of what must happen next.
بنیادینfundamental Laws taken to hold without exception; deep concepts and definitions; and what shares a border with philosophy.

The categories earn themselves on real passages. Ferdowsi, Rumi, Sa‘di, Hafez, Naser Khosrow — each is read for what it actually asserts about nature rather than for what can be read into it. Two of them are worth having here.

کوزه‌ای کو از یخابه پر بودچون عرق بر ظاهرش پیدا شود

آن ز سردی هوا آبی شدستاز درون کوزه نم بیرون نجست

Rumi · Masnavi

A jug filled with ice-water beads on the outside; that water came from the cold of the air, it did not seep out through the jug. Which is condensation, stated correctly, and stated against the obvious wrong answer.

The other is a measurement. Naser Khosrow, early in the Safarnāma, records reaching Nishapur and adds that there was an eclipse on the last Wednesday of that month. Read against his own dating, that is Wednesday 29 Ramadan 437 AH. Set a planetarium to Nishapur on the corresponding day — Wednesday, 9 April 1046 — and the eclipse is there, peaking around nine in the morning. A line written down a thousand years ago, checked against an ephemeris, and it holds.

The full argument, the rest of the passages and the plates are in the article, in Persian.

The eight school years are not a detour from the research and are not presented as one. A flat band is explained to a graduate seminar with the same equipment used to explain a pendulum to a fifteen-year-old: find the one thing the room already believes, and build from there.

More is coming to this page — course materials, workshop notes, and the recorded outreach lectures. In the meantime the Persian side of the outreach lives at Sieve / Alak, where the cases are worked out one at a time.
